Businesses of Bayside: Rebecca Thompson Fashion

The businesses of Bayside have a beautiful way of rising from rejection, and Bec from @rebecca_thompson_fashion is one of the most inspiring examples of all. Knocked back from fashion school, dismissed for her size, and selling clothes from the boot of her car — Bec turned every single ‘no’ into fuel, and 25 years later she’s one of the most celebrated designers in the country.

How long have you been in business?

25 years in the industry and 10 years in retail.

What inspired you to start?

I have wanted to be designer since I was 5. I decided to create my own brand when I was a size 22 because I was sick of being ignored in clothing stores because of my size. My business plan was originally a plus size collection. At the time when I decided to launch my own label I had just gone to see another designer in Sydney. She loved what I was wearing and placed an order immediately. I had 3 months to complete it but nowhere to produce it! I said yes anyway and made it work! Long story short, a woman I met serendipitously that helped me is still in my business today! We have a very special bond.

What is the magic that sets your business apart?

It’s all about how a women feels when she leaves my store vs when she walks in. I love seeing my customers step outside their comfort zone, try on something that they normally wouldn’t have the confidence to wear. That sparks them to lift their head and lift their shoulders. My number one priority is to create pieces women feel good in.

Random fact:

The first boutique to stock my clothes was Husk (in 2000) – they bought from the boot of my car!!
