The businesses of Bayside have a beautiful way of bringing the world back home, and Penny from @pennybernhardsson is a story that spans continents, decades, and a lifelong love of pattern that started with a floral wallpaper in a childhood bedroom. After 22 years in Sweden and 15 years shaping the world of textile and fashion design, Penny has landed in Bayside with a creative vision that’s entirely her own — joyful, whimsical, and unmistakably hers.
How long have you been in business?
My business is new, but I’ve worked as a textile and fashion designer for over 15 years.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I wanted the freedom to explore both pattern design and illustration—something a traditional job wouldn’t allow. Pattern design can be used across so many surfaces—fabric, wallpaper, homewares—while illustration brings stories to life on print and paper. I studied textile design at uni and have an associate diploma in art and design. My love for pattern started young—staring at the 70s floral wallpaper in my childhood bedroom, trying to find the repeat!
What’s the magic that sets you apart?
I have a strong eye for colour balance and a whimsical, slightly naive style shaped by years in children’s wear. My designs are joyful and commercial—with a distinct blend of Scandinavian minimalism (I lived in Sweden for 22 years) and quirky charm.
What does community mean to you?
Community means genuine connection—especially as someone who moved from overseas. Art has become my way of building those connections. I’ve supported local workshops and truly value the sense of belonging that comes through collaboration and creativity.
