The businesses of Bayside have a beautiful way of blossoming from pure, uncomplicated joy, and Malin from Malin Johansson Interiors is a perfect example of following what simply feels right. What started as a natural gift — transforming spaces for friends and family just because she loved it — has grown into a thriving design business built on creative freedom, one-of-a-kind treasures, and spaces that truly tell a story.
How long have you been in business?
I have been in the industry for 3 years and officially started my business 1 year ago.
What inspired you to start your business?
Honestly, I could do this all day long! I’ve always loved styling and transforming spaces, and I found myself constantly doing it for friends, family, and anyone who needed a creative eye. It never felt like work—it was just something that brought me joy. So I turned it into something more. Now I get to spend my days doing what I love: making spaces look amazing and helping people feel proud and happy in their homes or businesses.
What drives your business?
For me, it’s all about flexibility and freedom—being able to choose the clients I work with, the hours I keep, and the kind of projects I take on. As a small business, I can offer a more personal, relaxed experience—no rigid processes or corporate red tape. I get to work closely with each client, co-creating spaces that reflect their vision, not just a cookie-cutter approach. That creative freedom, and the genuine relationships I build along the way, are what keep me inspired every day.
What’s your special ‘magic’ as an interior stylist / designer?
I’ve always been drawn to pieces that tell a story—things you can’t just find in a catalogue. My special magic lies in sourcing eclectic, one-of-a-kind treasures from around the world and second-hand gems that bring depth and character to a space. I don’t believe in following trends or playing it safe—I want the spaces I design to stand out, spark conversation, and feel truly personal.
