The businesses of Bayside have a beautiful way of being built from pure determination and quiet courage, and the story of Vinay and Suma from @sandringham_fruit_market is one that will stay with you. Arriving in Australia with a dream, a Masters degree, and a willingness to start from scratch, Vinay worked his way up from the markets to Coles management — and when the corporate doors wouldn’t open, he and Suma didn’t wait. They built their own.
How long have you been in business?
16 months
What inspired you to start your business?
Vinay: I landed in Australia from India in 2015 (Suma arrived in 2022). The very next day I went to work with my brother in the Prahran fruit market @pinosfineproduce and have been in the industry ever since. After working for my brother I then started as fresh produce manager at Coles. During this time I finished my Masters and I tried to find a professional job but it was very hard. I had always dreamed of having my own business so this was perfect timing. I feel grateful for my wife Suma as she helped me fulfill my dream. She was the one who drove the decision.
What is your business ‘magic’ that sets you apart?
We offer all the everyday fruit and veg—but love surprising our customers with new and unique options too. I (Vinay) am in the shop every day and want each and every customer to know how important they are to us. Quality and freshness is a high priority and we source special requests and offer bulk options for cafés and locals. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers.
What does community mean to you?
Community means everything to us—it feels like family. We spend so much time in the shop that our customers naturally become part of our lives. We share chats, check in on each other, and have built real bonds that go far beyond business. Suma has even felt herself open up more through these everyday conversations which give her great comfort. We’re so grateful for the love and support from our community—it truly means the world to us.
