Day 12 of Businesses of Bayside
Celebrating the local legends who make our community thrive! Today, we’re featuring Caitlin from @caitlins_cantina – a school canteen (Sandringham Primary School) & catering business.
Here’s her story…
When did you start this business?
July 2018 – I have been in the food industry for 24 years!
What inspired you to start your business?
Fortuitously, the opportunity to take over Sandringham Primary School’s canteen came up when my daughter started prep at the school and I thought ‘I can do that – I’ve cooked for the queen!
Tell me about your business philosophy.
Healthy food for growing minds. It is important to me that the food I serve is home made from the finest quality ingredients. I support local business – Davi from Sandy fruit market, Annie from Lucky Star Bakery, and Lamont’s butcher. I want to keep kids interested in tasting food. I have themed menu items during the year to keep it interesting and to add excitement. I add stealth veggies and use classic recipes – all made with lots of love. I also have a separate menu for teachers which changes seasonally and coffee for parents.
What is your best selling item?
Taco Tuesday’s are the most popular by far!
What are your business plans over the next 3 years?
I will continue to grow the catering side of my business and I would love to expand into home cooked meals for the community.
What is the best compliment you have received?
It is important to me that the canteen is seen as a safe space for children – no child goes hungry on my watch! So when parents come up to tell me they feel comforted knowing this, it makes my day.
Are there any local Bayside businesses you love and want to shout out?
Yes – Karen from @bayside_afterbuild
What is something you do every day without fail?
I tell my daughter I love her and have a coffee.
If your business had a theme song, what would it be?
Simply the best
