The Businesses of Bayside come alive with incredible local talent, and today we’re shining a spotlight on one of our community’s most dedicated musicians whose passion for live performance has been entertaining audiences for nearly three decades.
Day 17 of Businesses of Bayside
Celebrating the local legends who make our community thrive! Today, we’re featuring Amy Sexton, vocalist and our own Bayside rockstar in @livinginthe21stcentury and @groovemachinecovers
Here’s her story…
How long have you been in the music industry?
28 years. As a teenager my friends and I were into acid jazz – my friends all played instruments and needed a singer to form a band. So they asked me and turned out I could sing … quite well!
Tell us about ‘Living in the 21st century’
Its a rock covers band made up of all local Bayside artists. We have been together for 5 years and focus on playing in Bayside venues incl @thehobsonstores , @lucky13garagemoorabbin , @hamptonrsl , @highettrsl ,private parties, charity events etc.
And Groove Machine?
This band was formed less than 1 year ago and is a completely different style. It’s more pop and groove, party stuff – fun music that gets everyone up on the dance floor – everyone enjoying a collective musical experience. We play further afield – mostly north Melbourne.
What do you find most rewarding about being a vocalist in a band?
Connecting with the audience. Music is so good for the soul, everyone in a room having an awesome time, connecting, forgetting about their day, or week.
What is the best compliment you have received?
Someone came up to me one night at a gig and said I actually played the song better than the original!! The song was ‘Beau River’.
What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this?
I have a PHD in molecular immunology so I would be doing something in this field. Something I may consider getting back into – unless I get picked up by a record company – I still want to be a popstar when I grow up!
